The Chinese Lion Dance dates back to the Han[1] Dynasty (205 BC to 220 AD) and reached its peak during the Tang[1] Dynasty (716–907). The Lion Dance and Dragon Dance are best known for celebrating the New Year, but the lion is also often performed at weddings, the Spring Festival, Harvest Festival, and Moon Festival.
At opening ceremonies, it is also considered indispensable for future happiness. Chinese businessmen outside China will therefore also provide a lion dance group at the opening of their business. However, the lion is not only present at joyful events. It also dances for the mourning of friends and family of a deceased person during the funeral ritual.
The Lion as a Symbol The lion can fulfill this important role, because in China it is considered a sacred animal. It symbolizes courage, wisdom and strength and is seen as the ruler of the earth, just as the dragon rules the sky. It is peaceful, helps people and brings blessings, happiness and joy of life everywhere.
